Escape Those Dreams

Lyrics

good night
how I wish those words were true this night
it’s my thoughts that keep me up
I’ve forgotten what real sleep feels like

so afraid to fall asleep
’cause my dreams, they tend to bring forth my dark past
all these scenes are buried deep
until I awake – I can’t make them go away

good night, sleep tight
let me escape those dreams tonight
keep me safe and never leave
let me fall and fall deep
into your arms where I’ll be free
into your heart and out of reach from fear

when I rise
the bitterness returns deceivingly
will you help me on my feet
regain consciousness of what I need?

so afraid I can’t move on
that my heart will be a cell of restlessness
surely it would bring me down
so I wish I could fight back my bitterness

been afraid to carry on
wasting my tears at a wailing wall
refusing to admit defeat
I lift my eyes to forgive once and for all

good night, sleep tight
I pray for peace from those dreams tonight
may the Lord keep you safe, he’ll never leave
watch over as you fall asleep
in his arms, where you are free
you’re in his heart and out of reach from fear
out of reach from fear

Behind the lyrics

The story behind this song was very painful to write about. It’s about a child who was abused and the aftermath later in life. This person was a hero to me, not caught in self-pity or bitterness but chose forgiveness. Ephesians 4:31–32 says “Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” I want to dedicate this song to all of you with difficult pasts, presents and to those who have sleeping problems. Through it all, remember that you are not alone and not forgotten. Nothing is too severe for God to heal.

In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.
